Enrolments

These graphs show total domestic and international Equivalent Full-time Student (EFTS) enrolments. Enrolments are key metrics used to assess and track the number and characteristics of students enrolling in an educational institution or programme.

In the period 1 January 2016 to 31 March 2020, before Te Pūkenga was established, the 16 institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) operated independently:

  • Total enrolments reported across the 16 ITPs declined between 2016 and 2019.
  • In 2019, the ITPs reported 57,941 domestic enrolments and 10,451 international enrolments.

Te Pūkenga began operating on 1 April 2020 and the 16 ITPs became its Crown entity subsidiary companies:

  • At the end of 2020, Te Pūkenga reported 50,292 domestic enrolments and 9297 international enrolments.
  • At the end of 2021, Te Pūkenga reported 83,289 domestic enrolments and 4477 international enrolments, including 21,352 learners from the four Transitional Industry Training Organisations in 2021.
  • At the end of 2022, Te Pūkenga had 82,333 domestic enrolments and 2861 international enrolments, including 23,503 learners who transferred to Te Pūkenga from the four Transitional Industry Training Organisations in 2022.

Note: Some enrolment figures were calculated because not all annual reports separately state total domestic or international enrolment figures.
