The Office of the Auditor-General | Te Mana Arotake (the Office) aims to improve trust and confidence in the public sector. The Auditor-General is the statutory auditor of all public organisations, playing a major part in ensuring that New Zealand’s public sector remains one of the most trusted in the world. No other organisation, public or private, has the overview of the whole public sector that the Office of the Auditor-General has with its aim to improve trust and confidence in the public sector.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real impact to help shape the future direction of the Office and make a meaningful difference!

Reporting to the Manager, Strategy and Performance, you’ll play a key role in providing high-quality analysis, insights, and advice to shape the strategic direction of the Auditor-General.

While we’re looking for a strong all-rounder, the primary focus of this role will be developing and advising on the Office’s strategic intentions, and leading the implementation of strategy through the Annual Plan. In addition, you’ll have the chance to drive wider initiatives, including refreshing the performance framework, improving the Office’s performance through monitoring and insights, strengthening governance, and contributing to a variety of strategic projects.

About you

We’re on the hunt for a dynamic and experienced Senior Advisor! If you have a strong understanding of strategic planning, performance reporting, governance, and accountability, and know exactly what ‘good’ looks like – we want to hear from you.

You’ll bring exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skills, alongside the confidence to communicate clearly and effectively, whether in writing or presenting to senior leaders and stakeholders. We’re looking for someone with a pragmatic, forward-thinking attitude who thrives in a collaborative environment, working alongside a small team and subject-matter experts across the organisation.

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

  • Strong strategic thinking ability and proven ability to identify trends, opportunities, and risks
  • Experience developing Strategic Intentions/Statements of intent documents that articulate medium-term strategy
  • The ability to develop and implement business planning approaches across an organisation
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide high-quality advice
  • At least four years’ experience working in a similar role in a public organisation
  • A sound understanding of the system of government and public management in New Zealand
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and te ao Māori
