Johnny joined the Office of the Auditor-General in September 2021 as a Sector Manager, Parliamentary Group. He is responsible for the Māori Affairs and Justice portfolios. Since 2009, Johnny has had various roles across the tertiary education and international education sector, including as an advisor to Ministers, executive leadership teams, and boards.

Johnny came to the Office from the Tertiary Education Commission where his roles included Project Lead – Operational Policy and Implementation for the Unified Funding System and Chief Advisor to the Deputy Chief Executive – Delivery. He has also held Private Secretary roles to Education Ministers in multiple governments.

At Education New Zealand, Johnny was the International Market Manager for South East Asia, focused on increasing and improving New Zealand’s education reputation by establishing Government-to-Government relationships. He has also worked closely with institutes of technology and polytechnics, and with private training establishments sectors as an Investment Manager.
