Deborah James

Sector Manager, Local Government.

Deborah joined the Office of the Auditor-General in February 2020 as the Sector Manager, Auckland, working across both the Local Government and Parliamentary Group. She is responsible for increasing understanding across the Office of the Auckland public sector (central and local government); building a strong Office brand in Auckland; and for a portfolio of Auckland based entities.

Before joining the Office, Deborah was the Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Auckland Council. Deborah has held senior policy roles in central and local government in Aotearoa; has worked as a nurse and managed an HIV/ sexual health clinic in the UK; and managed a large humanitarian aid project for women during the war in the Former Yugoslavia. Deborah has considerable NGO experience and is on the boards of Belong Aotearoa and the YWCA (national).

Deborah holds an LLB Hons; MscEcon in International Development Studies from Cardiff University and was admitted to the Bar in Auckland in 2001.
